Anti-smoking lobby fumes over in-flight tobacco sales
Wednesday, July 16, 2008 (GST)
Anti-smoking lobby group Quit has blasted a decision by Qantas to bring back in-flight tobacco sales on international flights as a "greedy cash grab".
Anti-smoking lobby group Quit has blasted a decision by Qantas to bring back in-flight tobacco sales on international flights as a "greedy cash grab".
The airline today confirmed it was again offering duty-free Cigarettes to passengers on international flights, almost a decade after it withdrew the products.
Quit executive director Fiona Sharkie said the airline's decision was a backwards step and put revenue ahead of passenger health.
"International flights are an opportunity for smokers to give up smoking, but having cheap Cigarettes promoted to them by Qantas in-flight completely undermines this opportunity," Ms Sharkie said.
"Perhaps the flying kangaroo should be renamed the cancer kangaroo, such is their insistence on the in-flight sale and display of a product that will ultimately kill more than half of long-term users."
Qantas stopped selling tobacco products in-flight in November 1999.
The airline's product and service general manager, Lesley Grant, said the decision to re-introduce Cigarettes was made due to customer demand.
"Regardless of what the product might be, if we see changes in demand we review our product range," Ms Grant said.
"We comply fully with all government regulations regarding the sale of all duty free products."
Ms Grant said Qantas joined Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic in offering duty free Cigarettes in flight.
A Qantas spokesperson said she did not know how much revenue tobacco sales was expected to generate.
There were no plans to sell Cigarettes on Jetstar flights, she said.
Ms Sharkie said it was disappointing an airline with national icon status had reversed its position.
"I know times are tough for airlines with fuel and other factors but really, is this going to make an enmorous difference," she said.
"Australia has been one of the leaders in tobacco control in the world and Qantas is our national carrier.
"It was making a fantastic show of support in tobacco control in this country and now this is such a retrograde step."
Quit is a joint initiative of The Cancer Council Victoria, VicHealth, Department of Human Services and the National Heart Foundation.
